Smart Ranker - certified with the Algorithmic Transparency Certificate from Adigital

Universia is an open and free platform that allows students to boost their careers by accessing job offers and internships in Latin America, Spain, and Portugal. It provides access to internships, job fairs, employment portals, competitions, and events. It facilitates universities and educational centers in connecting their talent with companies so that students can find employment. 

It is responsible for the technological development of Santander Open Academy, a global initiative by Banco Santander that facilitates access to training for all individuals, enabling them to develop the skills they need and access the best job opportunities. It provides them with the necessary tools to find their first job, improve their current one, or change their professional career. 

Throughout the year, Santander Open Academy publishes a wide range of programs from 13 countries, which are updated according to the most in-demand skills in the market. The published calls belong to institutions, specialists, and companies of international renown, who are responsible for the publication and selection of participants. 

One of the technological functionalities developed by Universia is "Smart Ranker," designed to assist program managers in the candidate selection processes. 
Thanks to artificial intelligence, the system can recognise and evaluate relevant traits of candidates enrolled in various scholarship programs and courses with limited spots, based on their information. It provides a score that can assist program managers in their candidate selection process.
The evaluation consists of a percentage score and its justification. 

• The "Smart Ranker" functionality has successfully obtained the Algorithmic Transparency Certificate from Adigital, which reflects the responsible use of generative artificial intelligence. For Universia, transparency in its processes and demonstrating how AI work has been carried out ethically and responsibly is crucial. Therefore, certifications such as the one from Adigital are highly beneficial.
• During the process of obtaining this certification, internal collaboration between different areas of the company was encouraged, involving teams from Santander Open Academy product, Technology, Legal Advisory, DPO, Marketing and Communication, among others. 
• This certification provided Universia with very important guidelines and controls for all processes. This is a starting point to continue understanding how to use new technologies responsibly which will allow Smart Ranker to offer its users an exceptional product.

• Despite having obtained the certification, it is not clear what the relationship between the certification and compliance with the European Union's AI Act is, which makes the company wonder: is this certification sufficient to ensure compliance with the EU AI Act, or are other controls necessary?
• Several of the issues raised in the certification refer to the data used to train or fine-tune the model or LLM to be used. 
• Which led Universia to question, what happens when these tasks don't exist and previously trained foundational models like ChatGPT, Llama, or Claude are being used? In those case, the company hoping to get the Certificate from Adigital would have to refer to the documentation provided by the company that created the model, which may not always be easily accessible.

• During the certification process, Universia identified the need to develop a template to serve as a basis for documenting these types of projects and their processes in a clear and transparent manner.
• It greatly helped other areas of the organisation to understand more clearly the benefits that this type of technology can bring.
