Initiative overview
The standard aligns innovation management processes, system design approaches and software engineering methods, giving organisations a structured route to identify and address ethical concerns or risks as systems are conceived and developed.
A central mechanism is transparent communication between management, engineering functions and selected stakeholders, used to elicit and prioritise ethical values relevant to a given system. These values are traced through the operational concept, value propositions and value dispositions embedded in the system design, and further carried through into the concept of operations, ethical requirements and ethical risk-based design. Notably, the standard explicitly does not provide specific guidance on designing algorithms to apply particular ethical values, such as fairness or privacy; its focus is on process rather than technical implementation.
Projects conforming to the standard are expected to balance management commitments around time and budget constraints against longer-term considerations of social responsiveness and accountability. The standard identifies the commitment of top executives to establishing and upholding organisational values as important to achieving this balance, pointing to a governance dimension that extends beyond engineering teams alone.
