Initiative overview
The Inter‑American Framework on Data Governance and Artificial Intelligence (MIGDIA) addresses the need for a regional approach to managing AI and data governance in the Americas, particularly in the context of rapid technological advances and diverse national capacities. It responds to challenges faced by governments in adopting external models and aims to provide guidance tailored to regional realities.
The initiative is developed through a multi‑stakeholder and intergovernmental process coordinated by the OAS, involving government representatives, civil society, private sector actors and technical working groups. Its development relied on policy co‑creation methods, including working groups, peer review processes, and public consultations.
MIGDIA produces several tools, including thematic guidelines, a model governance policy and a regional study, which support member states in designing national data and AI governance frameworks. It also promotes knowledge exchange and capacity building through regional forums and country-level roundtables.
The framework emphasises governance, coordination and collaboration, aiming to strengthen public administration and support democratic processes by enabling countries to develop responsible, locally adapted AI and data governance approaches.
