Results, outcomes and impacts
The remote pilot program demonstrated that drones and AI can safely and efficiently monitor remote environments, delivering better detection of ghost nets, threatened species, crocodiles and invasive buffel grass than traditional methods. Indigenous-led and ranger-delivered approaches improved coverage, accuracy and decision making while building lasting technical capability in communities and agencies. Across use cases, pilots reduced safety risks, costs and time in the field and enabled more targeted, evidence-based management actions. Overall, the program showed clear environmental, cultural and public safety benefits and provided a strong foundation for scaling these technologies into business-as-usual operations.
Challenges and lessons learned
The initiative faced challenges operating in remote and harsh environments, meeting aviation and safety requirements, and producing sufficiently high quality, consistent data to train AI models reliably. Building capability took time, as rangers and staff needed training, accreditation and confidence in both drone operations and AI-enabled workflows, often in areas with limited digital infrastructure. A key lesson was that early, genuine co-design with First Nations rangers was essential to ensure culturally appropriate use, trust, and Indigenous data sovereignty. The pilots also showed that success depends less on technical sophistication than on good data, simple repeatable processes, strong governance, and embedding the technology into business-as-usual decision making.
