Catalogue of Tools & Metrics for Trustworthy AI

These tools and metrics are designed to help AI actors develop and use trustworthy AI systems and applications that respect human rights and are fair, transparent, explainable, robust, secure and safe.

Content Credentials

Content Credentials help people access transparent information about the origin and history of digital content. They attach digitally signed, tamper-evident metadata to images, videos, and other media that records how the content was created and edited.

The information can include details such as who created the content, when it was created, where it came from, and its editing history, including which tools were used and whether AI tools were involved. This provenance information travels with the content and can be inspected to understand its history.

Content Credentials allow creators to disclose how their work was produced and give viewers more context about what they are seeing, helping people make informed decisions about the authenticity and origins of digital media.

The system works through three complementary mechanisms: Embedded Provenance, which attaches digitally signed data to the content; Invisible Watermarking, a stamp that can be embedded in digital media but cannot be detected by the human eye or ear; and Digital Fingerprinting, a coded representation of the content that helps locate the original material and its associated credentials.

Content Credentials are based on open standards developed through the C2PA (Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity) and aim to establish reliable provenance information for digital content across the digital ecosystem.
