Responsible innovation toolkit: Community jury

Responsible innovation toolkit: Community jury

Community jury is concept where multiple stakeholders impacted by a same technology are given the possibility to learn about a project, discuss with one another and provide feedback. This adaptation of citizen jury is a technique which helps project managers understand the perceptions and concerns stakeholders have for a particular technology.

A community jury is different from a focus group or market research; it allows the impacted stakeholders to hear directly from the subject matter experts in the product team, and cocreate collaborative solutions to challenging problems with them.

Benefits:

  • Expert testimony: members of a community jury hear details about the technology under consideration, directly from experts on the product team.
  • Proximity: allows decision-makers to hear directly from the community, and to learn about their values, concerns, and ideas regarding a particular issue or problem.
  • Consensus: provided collaborative solutions and an opportunity for stakeholders to learn and discuss key aspects of the technology. This allows for identifying areas of agreement and building common ground solutions to challenging problems.
