openIMIS

openIMIS

The open-source software openIMIS is a digital public good which powers versatile solutions for the management of health financing and social protection programs. It is designed to manage complex, high-volume data flows which are required to operate such schemes by integrating beneficiary, provider, and payer data. The software can be easily configured to support various workflows across the social protection delivery chain. Designed to be interoperable with other information systems, such as Hospital Information Systems for medical billing, or analytical platforms such as DHIS2, openIMIS integrates and contributes to Digital Public Infrastructure.

Together with Swiss Development Cooperation and EU, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) supports the development of openIMIS. As of fall 2025, more than 36 million people in 14 countries are currently benefiting from the software. In other countries, the introduction is being prepared or piloted. Using openIMIS, effectiveness and efficiency in service delivery can be increased, for example in Nepal where an AI-module checks invoices for accuracy or discrepancies in real time.
