Fernando Martínez-Plumed is Associate Professor of Computer Science at the Technical University of Valencia, Spain.

His innovative research focuses primarily on the evaluation and measurement of intelligent systems, providing a deeper understanding of the potential of artificial intelligence and the strategies to achieve it. A practical focus on AI and machine learning underpins his work, which has also found valuable applications in policy development. He has worked with the European Commission on a number of policy-oriented projects, using his expertise to monitor and analyse the development and impact of AI, and playing a key role in the development and review of the EU’s AI act.

Fernando has published more than 80 scientific articles in leading AI and machine learning journals and conference proceedings, including Science, Nature Machine Intelligence, and AIJ. He has also co-authored seven books in the field. He has received numerous awards for best papers at conferences, as well as the best young researcher award from the European Commission. He serves on the programme committees of top AI & ML conferences (AAAI, IJCAI, ICML, NeurIPS, UAI, ICLR, KDD, ECAI, ECML) and is on the editorial board of the prestigious Machine Learning Journal.
