Joy Aston is a Data and AI Ethics Lead within the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, where she leads on the policy and implementation of the Algorithmic Transparency Recording Standard (ATRS). She sits within the Responsible Data and AI Team, who ensure that public sector use of data and AI is transparent, trustworthy, ethical and responsible through a suite of guidance, tools and expertise. Beyond ethics, she has also worked on data licensing, compute, and delivering the UK’s Data (Use and Access) Act 2025.
