Michael Schönstein is Head of General Digital Policy at the German Federal Chancellery. In this function, he co-ordinates overarching digital policy issues for the German Federal Government and advises the chancellor on digital affairs. He is co-chair of the OECD Expert Group on AI Futures, and a Research Fellow at the Hertie School of Governance Centre for Digital Governance. Michael previously served as Head of Strategic Foresight and Analysis and the German Federal Labour Ministry’s Policy Lab Digital, Work & Society, where he co-ordinated the German Federal Government’s AI Strategy. Prior to this, Michael held various positions in the strategy department and staff of the minister at the German Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, the staff of the minister at the German Federal Ministry of Health, at the OECD’s Directorate for Employment, Labour and Social Affairs, and in the private sector. He is a frequent lecturer on digital governance issues at different universities and published several studies on digital transformation, labour, and health policy. Michael holds degrees in Economics, International Relations, and Public Policy from the University of St Andrews (UK) and the Hertie School of Governance (Germany).
