Yoshua Bengio has been a professor in the Department of Computer Science and Operations Research at the University of Montréal since 1993, and holds a Canada Research Chair in Artificial Intelligence. He is also Scientific Director Mila (Quebec Artificial Intelligence Institute) and of the Institute for Data Valorization (IVADO), and the co-chair of the Government of Canada’s Advisory Council on AI. He is Fellow of both the Royal Society of London and Canada, and is one of the recipients of the 2018 Turing Award for pioneering deep learning. He studied in Montréal, earned his PhD in computer science from McGill University in 1991, and post-doctoral studies at MIT.

His current interests include fundamental questions on deep learning, the geometry of generalization in high-dimensional spaces, biologically inspired learning algorithms, and challenging applications of statistical machine learning in AI tasks.

His goal is to contribute to uncovering the principles giving rise to intelligence through learning, as well as favour the development of AI for the benefit of all.
