Funding for AI research is allocated through several MBIE-administered mechanisms. E.g., AI is one of six priorities in the Catalyst Fund, and Data Science is one of ten platforms funded in the Strategic Science Investment Fund.
Initiative overview
As at August 2024, since 2007 MBIE (and predecessors) has invested NZD $62.9 million directed towards AI or Machine Learning research across 103 projects.Of these, 44 projects have completed, leaving MBIE's total current investment in AI or Machine learning at $51.6 million across 59 active projects.For the majority (88) of the 103 projects, AI or Machine Learning was not the main focus of the research but contributed to other research aims.For 24 projects, 11 complete ($4.89 million) and 13 active ($11.5 million), AI or machine learning was the primary focus (more than 50%) of the research.Note that, in these figure, the total investment in the projects is mostly greater that the sums quoted, eg. the total investment in the headline 103 projects is $211 million. The dollar figures quoted are the value of the portion of the contracted specifically directed towards AI/Machine Learning research as opposed to other research aims.
