Ancient Woodlands Ireland project

The project builds on an established framework for identifying ancient woodlands. It will notably integrate AI-derived digital mapping of long-established woodlands. By developing a methodology for integrating AI-derived digital mapping of historic maps and analysis of contemporary satellite imagery, this project can also help understand long-term changes of other land-cover types.

Initiative overview

This project expands work on identifying ancient and long-established woodlands in Ireland by introducing digital and AI-based methods. Building on existing survey frameworks, it seeks to integrate AI-derived mapping from historic maps with analysis of modern satellite imagery. There are two primary goals: to improve accuracy in recognizing long-established woodland areas and to create a methodology that can track long-term land-cover changes more broadly. By combining historical cartographic sources with contemporary remote sensing, the project hopes to provide a replicable approach to understanding how landscapes evolve and where conservation priorities should be focused.
