Initiative overview
Artificial intelligence (AI) is being increasingly integrated across Irish Government Departments and public service bodies to improve service delivery, decision-making, and operational efficiency. The initiative addresses the challenge of leveraging AI in a coordinated and scalable manner, ensuring that innovations provide tangible benefits to citizens while maintaining transparency and accountability.
The Department of Public Expenditure, NDP Delivery and Reform (DPENDR) is leading several pilot projects to test practical use cases of AI within government operations. These pilots explore how AI can streamline processes, enhance public services, and support evidence-based policymaking. The projects provide valuable insights into the potential and limitations of AI, helping to inform broader adoption strategies.
A key objective of the initiative is to implement a vendor-neutral approach to AI development. This strategy promotes the creation of generic “building blocks”, reusable AI services that can be adapted across multiple departments and functions. By standardising approaches and tools, the initiative aims to reduce duplication, improve interoperability, and accelerate the deployment of AI solutions throughout the public sector.
