Managed by the German Environment Agency, this lab specialises in leveraging AI and big data to advance environmental enforcement, research, and the sustainable use of AI technologies. As part of the Federal Government’s economic stimulus and future technologies package, it is funded until 2025. The lab generates data-driven insights to inform policy decisions and raise public awareness on environmental issues, while also promoting a modern and efficient approach to public administration.

Initiative overview
The AI lab located at the Federal Environment Agency started its operations after its official opening in October 2023.The two central tasks of the AI lab are the modernization and digitalization of the environmental administration and the development of AI and data-based applications to support the agencies in the jurisdication oft he BMUV in their enforcement and research tasks.With currently 32 employees, the AI lab has built up substantial "in-house" expertise, particularly in the areas of data, data analysis, and AI, in order to anchor data-based and modern working within the authorities - from automated processes to new work methods. Regarding concrete applications, todate more than 70 AI application cases have been identified in various areas through the cyclical "Use Case Discovery Process" developed specifically for the AI lab, twenty of which are currently being implemented or have been finished.The data-based insights gained from the Use Cases in the AI Lab can serve as a basis for political decisions by the BMUV and the Federal Government. Results are also made available to the public and enable a deeper understanding of complex environmental and transformation processes.The establishment of the AI lab was decided as a measure within the environmental policy digital agenda of the BMUV and anchored in the updated AI strategy 2020 and the federal government's data strategy 2021. The AI lab is being financed with a total of 26.4 million for a limited period from 2021-2025. Future financing from 2026 is not yet secured.
