Established in 2020 by the BMAS, the CIP focuses on promoting socially responsible and participatory approaches to AI development. It explores a range of tools to support collaborative and participatory social innovation processes. CIP is also a key component of the “Civic Coding – Innovation Network AI for the Common Good,” an interdepartmental initiative involving the BMAS, the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV).

The project is striving for broad-based acceptance in society and design of technology for the benefit of the common good. In addition, the Civic Innovation Platform is part of Civic Coding - the innovation network on the common good.Support for the human-centred development and use of AI applications Civic Innovation Platform is part of Civic Coding - the innovation network AI for the common good.Support for the human-centred development and use of AI applications for the common good and society benefits from two funding stages: First, financially and ideally through a prize of up to EUR 20 000 and in-kind support like consulting and workshop offerings. This is part of the idea contest AI is what we make it! in which project teams submit their ideas for AI applications that benefit the common good. Second, a long-term project funding was started in 2023. Objectives:Enable and support social technology design that takes up impulses from (civil) society, promotes cooperation and collaboration across all sectors and takes into account and integrates their diverse resources.
