Initiative overview

The Ministry of Health officially launched in December 2016 a national call for projects, marking the start of funding for the first two genomic platforms dedicated to diagnostics and therapeutic monitoring, out of a total of 12 platforms expected within five years. These centers of excellence illustrate the ongoing support of public authorities for medical innovation, particularly for high-throughput human genome sequencing, which underpins genomic medicine, also referred to as “personalized” medicine.

Key focus areas include:

  • Cancer: Enables more effective therapeutic adaptation, particularly through immunotherapy
  • Rare diseases: Improves diagnosis for ~7,000 identified rare diseases, ending the “diagnostic wandering” patients often experience
  • Common diseases: Addresses major metabolic disorders (e.g., diabetes, obesity), cardiovascular diseases, and neurodegenerative diseases (e.g., Alzheimer’s)
