Initiative overview
The Guidance for AI Adoption: Implementation Guidance is an Australian Government initiative released in October 2025 to support organisations in adopting AI responsibly across the economy. It responds to the need to build confidence, trust and capability in AI use by providing structured, practical practices aligned with Australia’s AI Ethics Principles and international standards.
The initiative targets both AI developers and deployers, including businesses, government bodies and non-profits, and offers detailed governance and technical guidance. It is designed to be accessible to varied audiences, with a focus on integrating AI practices into existing organisational governance systems while enabling experimentation and scaling of AI initiatives.
It addresses risks arising from AI systems, such as bias, lack of transparency and potential harm to individuals, communities and organisations. The framework promotes a human-centred approach, ensuring fairness, inclusion and respect for rights, and encourages organisations to assess impacts, engage stakeholders and monitor harms throughout the AI lifecycle.
Implementation is structured around six practices: defining accountability, understanding impacts, managing risks, ensuring transparency, testing and monitoring systems, and maintaining human oversight. These are supported by processes such as stakeholder engagement, risk assessments, incident reporting, AI registers, and continuous monitoring, enabling organisations to prevent, identify and mitigate AI-related risks while meeting legal and ethical obligations.
