Initiative overview
The Guidance on the Use of AI by the Public Sector in Ireland provides a framework to ensure that AI technologies are used responsibly and effectively within government operations. Published by the Department of Public Expenditure, NDP Delivery and Reform (DPENDR) in 2024, the Interim Guidelines for the Use of AI in the Public Service establish principles and best practices for deploying AI tools in a transparent, fair, and accountable manner.
Key objectives of the initiative include:
- Promoting ethical and human-centred AI use in public administration
- Ensuring transparency, accountability, and fairness in AI-supported decision-making
- Providing practical guidance for public bodies experimenting with or implementing AI systems
- Supporting capacity-building and awareness across the civil service
Complementing this effort, the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has issued guidance on cybersecurity risks associated with generative AI. This document aims to:
- Raise awareness of potential vulnerabilities in AI use
- Support public bodies in managing data security and privacy risks
- Encourage safe experimentation with AI tools while maintaining system integrity
Further Guidelines on the Responsible Use of AI in the Public Sector are scheduled for publication in 2025, building upon the interim framework and integrating lessons learned from early AI use cases across government.
