Industrial Strategy: Building a Britain Fit for the Future (White Paper)
Initiative overview
The Industrial Strategy also reinforces the importance of five foundations of productivity: Ideas, People, Infrastructure, Business Environment and Places. The first of these foundations focuses on the science and innovation space and is based on the prospect that an innovative economy is underpinned by world-leading research, world-class facilities and international collaborations. It sets out four broad challenges that the strategy will address: a need to increase investment in R&D, both from Government and the private sector; improving the UK's ability to capitalise on ideas originating from scientific research through commercialisation; building excellence in research and innovation across the UK to foster local ecosystems that can sustain growth; and ensuring that the UK remains a world leader in international R&D collaboration through its strong reputation and attractiveness for funding and talent. The initiative has the following objective(s):- The world is undergoing significant technological and demographic changes and four Grand Challenges set out in the Industrial Strategy aim to put the UK at the forefront of the industries of the future. These Grand Challenges are as follows: - Putting the UK at the forefront of the artificial intelligence and data revolution.- Maximising the advantages for UK industry from the global shift to clean growth.- Making the UK a world leader in shaping the future of mobility.- Harnessing the power of innovation to help meet the needs of an ageing society.
