A cross-departmental working group established to ensure that relevant government agencies are involved in the conversation on AI related IP Policy matters. This group provides an opportunity to seek views from diverse stakeholders on how the current IP settings intersect with AI development and adoption in Australia and whether the government could consider any potential changes.

Initiative overview

The AIWG is a working group of the IP Policy Group, an inter-departmental committee that supports the government's policy agenda for IP issues. It is currently chaired by IP Australia and comprised of representatives from relevant Australian Government agencies including the Attorney-General's Department, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), Department of Industry, Science and Resources (DISR) and the Digital Transformation Agency (DTA). Recent projects under the AIWG include analysis of available data holdings, and economic research on drivers of AI investment.The initiative has the following objective(s):To explore issues at the intersection of AI and IP, which may include:- the role of IP in the development and adoption of AI systems- IP rights and the increasing use of AI in innovation and creativity- implications of AI on the rules of IP protection- AI and its impacts on consumers' interaction with IP such as trademarks.
