Initiative overview
The AZ KI4KL will not only serve as a centre for knowledge exchange and research, but also as a driving force for innovation and progress in the field of local self-government. The objective is to utilise the potential of AI research and development in a targeted manner in order to enable innovative applications in public administration and in municipal companies. The project focuses on services of general interest, in particular the sustainable positioning of AI-supported smart city applications in the economic and ecological transformation process.Background and shifts in policy Municipalities are the administrations most proximate to the citizens. With increasing amounts of data to be processed in automated ways and with markedly spatial implications of that in cities and communities, there is a need for the development of AI solutions specifically for the urban context.Given Germany's federal structure and legacy of multi-level governance, a joint policy approach applies of federal funding and locally exemplified project work whose results will be made available to all municipalities in the future.A dedicated centre can also offer a reference space to discursively engage organizational, technical and ethical dimensions of AI applications in municipalities.Objectives:To develop automated solutions for municipal administrations and planning processes.
