Initiative overview
The Public Service Data Strategy 2019–2023 was designed to improve how data is used and managed across Ireland’s public service. Many government departments and agencies collect large amounts of data, but often in disconnected systems. This strategy aimed to fix that by encouraging a more coordinated and consistent approach, helping public bodies share and use data more effectively to improve services.
Key goals included improving data quality, strengthening data governance, and making sure data could be shared securely and responsibly. It also focused on training staff, building better systems, and encouraging evidence-based decision-making. The strategy supported wider government goals like digital transformation and open data, while also respecting privacy and legal standards.
The work involved a range of public bodies and policy makers, with clear actions and guidance to support implementation. It marked an important step toward treating data as a shared resource for the public good.
A new strategy is expected in 2025. It will likely build on the progress made so far, while responding to new challenges such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and growing demands for more transparent and efficient public services.
