The federal government's national strategy for artificial intelligence (AI) was published in 2021 under the title Artificial Intelligence Mission Austria 2030 (AIM AT 2030). In principle, the AI strategy is an agile strategy that can be further developed against the backdrop of rapidly changing technological, legal and social developments.In this sense, the AI Implementation Plan 2024 is not only a first interim report, but also a supplement to and specification of the AIM AT 2030. The implementation plan contains 47 measures and AI projects from all twelve federal ministries that are being implemented or planned in the short to medium term. The measures presented are based on four horizontal and four vertical priorities:Horizontal priorities (guiding principles of all measures): Trustworthiness of AI; Resilience and security of and through AI; Climate neutrality and sustainability of and through AI; Technology sovereignty and business locationVertical priorities (specific application domains): Research, innovation and business; Education and skills; Administration and citizen services; Governance and strategies.Examples of some of the 47 measures in the 2024 Implementation Plan include: AI focus in the 2025–27 performance agreement for public universities; Establishment of an “Austrian Competence Center for Digital Farming”; Preparation of an AI Hub Austria in the area of research and innovation; AI literacy focus of the digital competence offensive; Improvement of digital administrative services through AI-supported tools, such as testing an LLM chatbot for questions about ID Austria; Creating a suitable legal framework for AI in the healthcare sector.
