In September 2018, DARPA announced a multi-year investment of more than $2 billion on AI R&D in a portfolio of some 50 new and existing programs collectively called the AI Next campaign.
Initiative overview
Broad Agency Announcements (BAAs) are preceded by consultations with industry, research organizations and universities. DARPA comprises approximately 220 government employees in six technical offices, including nearly 100 program managers, who together oversee about 250 R&D programs. DARPA invests in AI R&D, though budget figures are not publicly available.The initiative has the following objective(s):To automate critical DoD business processes, such as security-clearance vetting or accrediting software systems for operational deployment.To improve the robustness and reliability of AI systems.To enhance the security and resiliency of machine learning and AI technologies.To reduce power, data, and performance inefficiencies.To pioneer the next generation of AI algorithms and applications.
