Pionniers de l'IA
Initiative overview
Launched in September 2025 within France's national AI strategy (Phase 3) and France 2030 investment plan, the 'Pionniers de l'IA' programme is operated for the State by Bpifrance and the Agence de programmes Numérique (Inria). The programme targets projects developing breakthrough ('rupture') AI technologies with high economic impact and national sovereignty significance, particularly in five priority sectors: industrial design and manufacturing, biomedical and health, ecological transition, cybersecurity, and energy. Projects progress through three selective phases: Phase 1 — technical feasibility (100% grant, EUR 100K–EUR 200K, 6–12 months); Phase 2 — prototype and demonstrator development (50% grant/advance for enterprises, 100% for research, EUR 400K–EUR 800K, 6–18 months); Phase 3 — market application and MVP development (up to 50% for enterprises, EUR 3M–EUR 8M, 1–3 years). Passage between phases is selective. International consortia with European partners are eligible; European partners may access funding from the Current AI Foundation. 23 first-round laureates were announced in February 2026. The programme succeeds earlier France 2030 AI calls (Communs numériques pour l'IA générative, 2023; Accélération des usages de l'IA générative, 2024).
