Projects from the National Institute of Geographic and Forestry Information (IGN)

The French National Institute of Geographical and Forest Information (IGN) leads several AI-enhanced projects supporting land use, ecology, and agriculture. These include LiDAR HD (3D national mapping), OCS GE (land cover classification), CarHab (habitat modelling), AI4GEO (automated 2D/3D mapping from satellite data), CAP monitoring (with MASA/ASP), and BDForêt (forest reference mapping), advancing data-driven public policy and environmental management.

Initiative overview

The IGN has launched several projects with AI components:
• Lidar HD: 3D mapping of the entire ground and above-ground of France, classified into several classes (ground, water, vegetation, buildings, bridges, permanent above-ground)
• OCS GE : a national reference usable at different territorial levels for the implementation of public land-use policies and the development of urban planning documents
• CarHab: national cartographic modeling of natural and semi-natural habitats for the terrestrial ecosystems of mainland and overseas France
• AI4GEO: an R&D programme with an industrial research phase aiming to overcome technological barriers to the automatic production of 2D and 3D Geographic Information with semantic content, based on satellite imagery data
• Monitoring of the Common Agricultural Policy (agreement with MASA and ASP)
• BDForêt: a geographic reference for forest professionals and for environmental and land-use planning stakeholders in mainland France.
