Initiative overview

"Artificial Intelligence “ From Theory to Practice" is a national-level educational initiative in Croatia that aims to bridge the gap between theoretical understanding of artificial intelligence (AI) and its practical applications. Launched in response to the growing demand for digital and AI-related competencies in the workforce, this initiative seeks to equip secondary school students and teachers with foundational knowledge and hands-on experience in AI technologies. By integrating AI into the formal education curriculum, the project addresses a critical skills gap and prepares the next generation for active participation in the digital economy. The primary objectives of the initiative are threefold: first, to raise awareness and understanding of AI among students and educators; second, to build technical skills and critical thinking around the development and use of AI tools; and third, to promote ethical and responsible AI practices. To achieve these goals, the program offers a comprehensive AI curriculum co-designed with academic experts, industry stakeholders, and education authorities. It includes modules on machine learning, data analysis, computer vision, and natural language processing, supported by real-world case studies and interactive learning platforms.Initially piloted in a select number of schools, the initiative has gradually expanded nationwide, reaching hundreds of educators and thousands of students. Teachers undergo specialized training and certification to ensure consistent, high-quality delivery of content. The program also incorporates feedback loops, allowing continuous refinement based on classroom experience and emerging technological trends. Furthermore, partnerships with universities, tech companies, and government bodies enhance the program's relevance and scalability.Looking ahead, "Artificial Intelligence “ From Theory to Practice" is positioned to serve as a model for regional and international replication. Its future evolution includes integrating AI into other STEM subjects, scaling the program to primary education, and aligning with broader EU digital education strategies. As AI continues to reshape economies and societies, Croatia's early investment in AI literacy through this initiative represents a forward-thinking approach to national capacity-building and digital inclusion.
