On 3 November 2023, United Nations Development Programme and Microsoft launched the AI4Dev Reference Group to help shape prospective AI opportunities in Nigeria. The collaboration is the latest in ongoing UNDP<>Microsoft Partnerships in Nigeria, which aim to support the acceleration of development in the country through digital transformation.

Initiative overview

Key functions of the AI4Dev Reference Group will include mitigating the risks of AI by undertaking analysis and mapping out emerging trends of frontier technologies. Additionally, the Reference Group will serve as a sounding board and advisory panel on how to leverage AI and other frontier technologies towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030 in Nigeria. Further, it will provide advice to the broader development community in Nigeria and the UN leadership on measures to mitigate any risks associated with the uptake of these frontier technologies. Finally, the AI4Dev Reference Group will work as a Research and Development platform for policy makers, development partners and the entire UN System in Nigeria to better track and monitor trends, signals and advise on opportunities for AI.
