Initiative overview

In August 2024, the Swedish government asked the Agency for Digital Government (DIGG) and the Swedish Authority for Privacy Protection (IMY) to draw up national guidelines on the use of generative AI in the public sector. The task responds to the growing interest in generative tools but also the need to ensure they are applied responsibly, legally, and securely in government work.

The guidelines will cover both opportunities and risks, giving public bodies clear standards for testing and using generative AI. A key goal is to help upskill civil servants so they can make informed, competent use of new technologies while safeguarding citizens’ rights.
