Data – en underutnyttjad resurs för Sverige

Initiative overview

Sweden's national data strategy, titled Data – an underutilized resource for Sweden, was introduced in 2021 as part of the government's innovation program. Developed in collaboration with industry stakeholders, the strategy aims to enhance access to data, particularly to support advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and digital innovation. Recognizing data as a critical asset, the strategy seeks to unlock its potential to drive economic growth, improve public services, and foster innovation across various sectors.

To implement this strategy, the Swedish government issued seven specific commissions to various government agencies, coordinated by the National Innovation Council. These commissions focused on developing the necessary infrastructure and frameworks to facilitate secure and efficient data sharing and utilization. As of 2024, all assigned tasks have been completed, marking a significant milestone in Sweden's data-driven transformation.

A key component of this initiative is the role of the Agency for Digital Government (DIGG), which has been tasked with coordinating data-driven innovation efforts across the public sector. DIGG's responsibilities include overseeing the implementation of shared data platforms, establishing data governance standards, and promoting the use of open data to stimulate innovation and improve public services. The agency's work ensures that data is utilized responsibly and effectively, aligning with Sweden's digitalization goals.
