Empowering Education Leaders: A Toolkit for Safe, Ethical, and Equitable AI Integration

Initiative overview

This toolkit is structured into three separate sections, each featuring modules that can be accessed in any order based on the specific needs and priorities of educational leaders:1. **Mitigating Risk: Protecting Student Privacy, Security, and Non-Discrimination (Modules 1-3)**. Understanding relevant federal laws, regulations, and guidelines is a crucial initial step for educational leaders planning to implement AI in schools. Leaders must be aware of how existing federal policies apply to their unique contexts. This section encourages leaders to explore privacy and data security obligations, the intersection of civil rights, accessibility, and digital equity with AI, and to carefully evaluate the potential benefits and risks of AI usage. It is particularly relevant for leaders aiming to proactively address issues of student safety, privacy, and security in their AI implementation plans.2. **Developing a Strategy for AI Integration in the Instructional Core (Modules 4-7)**. AI technologies have already become widespread in educational environments, making firsthand exploration essential for comprehension. Feedback from educators during listening sessions emphasized the importance of leveraging insights from previous educational technology advancements to create a clear and coherent strategy linked to the instructional core as a foundational step in AI planning, with the understanding that this strategy may need to be revised as more is learned about AI. Leaders identified three additional steps to enhance their strategy for effectively utilizing AI tools tailored to student needs: (1) engage with and inform their communities, (2) set priorities and establish a pace for implementation, and (3) support the execution of the community's strategy through a task force. This section offers resources to assist educational leaders in evaluating the evidence surrounding AI tools and guiding them through these three critical steps, making it suitable for leaders involved in or starting the strategic planning process for AI.3. **Maximizing Opportunity: Guiding the Effective Use and Evaluation of AI (Modules 8-10)**. While exploration and strategy development are vital initial phases, the Department encourages educational leaders to take an active role in directing the effective use of AI to improve teaching and student learning, whether for educator productivity or instructional purposes. Leaders highlighted three key steps for shaping AI usage: (1) fostering AI literacy among educators, (2) updating responsible use policies, and (3) creating a comprehensive system-wide plan. This section is designed for educational leaders who have established a clear strategy for AI use and are prepared to focus on guiding, shaping, and continuously assessing AI implementation.
