The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) has engaged extensively with both industry and regulators to understand how we can leverage tools for trustworthy AI, like assurance techniques and standards, to help operationalise the government's proposed regulatory principles in practice, for example, fairness. To investigate this in practice, DSIT has launched the Fairness Innovation Challenge alongside Innovate UK.

The initiative has the following objective(s): encourage the development of socio-technical solutions to address bias and discrimination in AI systems, and test how these solutions can comply with relevant regulation including the Equality Act 2010, the UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018 provide greater clarity about how different assurance mechanisms can be applied in practice demonstrate how innovators can comply with the UK's proposed AI regulatory principles, like fairness, in a particular context of use
