FCAI is among the Research Council of Finland’s flagships. It hosts a community of AI experts in artificial intelligence in Finland, initiated by Aalto University, University of Helsinki, and VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland. FCAI hosts ELLIS Unit Helsinki, a node in the pan-European ELLIS network.FCAI is implemented through a large project portfolio. Research Council of Finland’s FCAI flagship funding is a small share of the total funding (about 3% in 2019–2020).

Initiative overview

Our goal in FCAI is to create new types of AI, which can operate with humans in the complex world, and to renew the Finnish industry with this new AI. Key objectives: data efficiency, trust & ethics, understandabilityTo create Real AI, we have set up three grand scientific objectives: data efficiency, trust & ethics, and understandability.Present-day AI solutions work well only in a very small subset of simple domains. In order to expand the deployment of AI further, we need new tools that overcome the key shortcomings of current AI systems.
