The Independent International Scientific Panel on AI, established by UN General Assembly Resolution A/RES/79/325 on 26 August 2025, is the first global scientific body on artificial intelligence. It brings together 40 experts to assess how AI is transforming society and to provide rigorous, independent scientific insight to inform international deliberations, as envisaged under the Global Digital Compact (A/RES/79/1).

Initiative overview

The Independent International Scientific Panel on AI was created following intergovernmental negotiations and broad consultations with diverse stakeholders under a United Nations General Assembly resolution. It forms part of the commitments of the Global Digital Compact, which sets out a vision for an open, safe and inclusive digital future.

The Panel’s role is to advance scientific understanding of artificial intelligence and to support global discussions by providing independent, evidence-based insight. By bringing together leading experts from across disciplines, it contributes to ensuring that international deliberations on AI are informed by the best available scientific knowledge.
