Initiative overview
Innovation and Enterprise Flanders (VLAIO) has made significant investments to strengthen the region’s AI innovation ecosystem. In 2024, VLAIO allocated approximately EUR 97 million to support AI innovation projects, promoting research excellence and boosting the innovation capacity of Flemish industries. This initiative reflects Flanders’ strategic commitment to embedding artificial intelligence across sectors as a driver of sustainable economic growth and technological leadership.
The funding primarily supports bottom-up innovation, allowing businesses—ranging from start-ups and SMEs to large enterprises—to develop and apply AI-driven solutions tailored to their needs. These projects span diverse domains such as manufacturing, healthcare, logistics, and environmental technology. By encouraging experimentation and co-creation, VLAIO helps companies turn emerging AI capabilities into practical tools that enhance productivity, competitiveness, and digital maturity.
Beyond financial support, VLAIO provides access to a broader innovation ecosystem that connects businesses with research institutions, technology centres, and public partners. This collaborative approach ensures that AI solutions are developed responsibly and effectively, with a strong emphasis on applicability and societal value.
