Initiative overview
Local Government Denmark (KL), the association representing Danish municipalities, has established a Digitalisation Centre to strengthen local governments’ capacity to use digital technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI). The centre addresses the growing need for municipalities to adapt to rapid technological change while ensuring that digital transformation creates tangible value for citizens, improves public services, and supports sustainable local development.
The centre’s main objectives are to collect and share knowledge on digitalisation, support municipalities in experimenting with and adopting new technologies, and identify emerging challenges related to digital governance and innovation. It provides municipalities with practical, action-oriented guidance on key areas such as data security, IT procurement, framework architecture, and ethical AI use. By acting as a central hub of expertise, the centre helps ensure that digital solutions are implemented effectively and responsibly across Denmark’s municipalities.
In addition to its advisory and coordination role, KL has launched an AI School designed for managers, executives, and elected officials. This programme aims to build understanding and leadership capacity around AI, enabling decision-makers to recognise opportunities, manage risks, and strategically integrate AI into municipal operations and services.
