The National Integrated Cyber Infrastructure System (NICIS) provides integrated high‑performance computing, high‑speed networking and national research data infrastructure to support research, education and industrial development.

Initiative overview

NICIS is South Africa’s national framework for delivering shared cyberinfrastructure to the research and education communities. It integrates high‑performance computing capability, high‑speed network capacity and a national research data infrastructure into a hierarchically organised system that connects local resources with globally connected infrastructures, enabling seamless access for users across disciplines.

Through this integrated approach, NICIS brings together national supercomputing facilities, research data services and advanced research and education networks as a coordinated platform. The initiative is designed to promote scientific and industrial development by supporting data‑intensive research, skills development and innovation, and by enabling South African researchers and institutions to participate effectively in national, regional and international research collaborations.
