Initiative overview
Slovakia is actively working to improve education in artificial intelligence (AI) at its universities to better prepare students for a future where digital technologies are increasingly important. Many higher education institutions currently lack up-to-date resources and courses focused specifically on AI, which limits students’ ability to develop the relevant skills needed in this fast-growing field. This gap presents both a challenge and an opportunity. By providing new courses, Slovakia can help students become qualified AI professionals who contribute to the country’s economic and technological growth.
Subjects include such as the basics of artificial intelligence, an introduction to neural networks, more advanced topics on neural networks, and programming languages used for AI development. The goal is to offer students a strong foundation in both AI theory and practical skills. These courses are designed to be accessible for students from various technical backgrounds, helping to build a wider pool of specialists who understand AI technologies and how to apply them in real situations.
In collaboration with the Digital Coalition, the Government of Slovakia supported the implementation of the national “IT Academy − Education for the 21st Century” project to educate the top ICT specialists, prepare the pilot projects for digital transformation of the education system and schools to identify and enhance the digital economy competencies, digitally transform the vocational education and training at all its levels of education, including the higher vocational education and post-secondary specialized education, with the option to offer a free choice of educational path by choosing the bachelor’s higher education degree, or by recognising tertiary education completed with the possibility of a smooth transition to higher university study of the second degree.
This initiative brings together universities, government bodies, and industry experts to ensure the new study materials are accurate and relevant to the needs of employers and society. Universities pilot these new subjects and give feedback to improve the materials. Teachers receive support to help them introduce these courses effectively. Cooperation among different partners helps make sure the reforms are well coordinated and meet the standards expected in modern digital education.
Looking ahead, the project aims to grow and adapt as AI technology evolves. This could include creating more advanced courses or introducing new topics like AI ethics, industry-specific applications, or ongoing training for current professionals. The broader educational reform linked to the “IT Academy − Education for the 21st Century” project supports this growth by promoting digital transformation across all levels of education. Slovakia hopes to build a workforce ready to meet future challenges and opportunities in AI and the digital economy.
