The National Open Data Portal is an API interface that provides access to a large data repository of the public administration. The main objective of the data.gov.cy is to offer the user the ability to easily and quickly find and access processed or unprocessed public sector data, with a view to their reuse and exploitation beyond their original destination, for the development of innovative services / products with added value. This both promotes economic growth and ensures transparency.
Initiative overview
The data.gov.cy is an expression of the policy applied regarding the re-use of public data and the promotion of Open Data in Cyprus. The Department of Public Administration and Personnel of the Ministry of Finance is the Department responsible for the implementation of the European Directive 2019/1024/EU which replaced the previous Directive 2013/37/EU. For this purpose, in November 2021, the Open Data, Re-use of Public Sector Documents and Information and Related Matters Law of 2021 N. 143(I)/2021 entered into force, through which domestic law was harmonized with the above European Directives. The adoption of the new legislation repealed the previous law in force of 2015 [Law 205(I)/2015], as well as the decrees issued under this legislation. (more on the subpage Institutional Framework). What kind of data is available? The data.gov.cy has datasets from almost all departments / services of the Cypriot government, as well as a number of data from the wider public sector and local authorities. The datasets can be searched in the catalogue by title, subject category, organisation, format, etc. In case you find a dataset that interests you, click on the title and you will be redirected to a page with more details (metadata) about that dataset. Most datasets can be accessed directly, while some can be accessed via links to websites or apps. How was data.gov.cy developed? The data.gov.cy was developed using the globally used DKAN data management system, which makes data accessible by providing tools that improve data publishing, dissemination, discovery and use. The development of the data.gov.cy is the result of the collaboration between the Department of Public Administration and Personnel and the Open University of Cyprus, which was sealed through the signing of Memorandum of Understanding in September 2016 between the two institutions, aiming at the development of the new National Open Data Portal. The existing form of the portal replaced in early 2018 its previous form, which had been developed in 2014 by the Department of Public Administration and Personnel in cooperation with the Intelligence Department of the Ministry of Finance and was hosted on the government hub.
