The Next Generation Energy Systems (NexSys) project develops pathways toward a net-zero energy system in Ireland. It uses AI in the Cities & Communities hub to analyse geospatial and sensor data for smarter energy use. The project combines big data analysis and citizen science to improve energy efficiency at neighbourhood and city levels.

Initiative overview

The NexSys collaborative project aims to accelerate Ireland’s transition to a net-zero energy system by integrating research across five key areas:

  • Energy Systems
  • Water
  • Transport
  • Cities & Communities (CC)
  • Offshore Wind

Within the Cities & Communities hub, AI is applied to the Earth Observation Big Data work package to:

  • Mine geospatial data, including satellite imagery
  • Leverage data from in-situ sensors to identify clusters of energy consumers
  • Enable energy sharing, where the waste energy of one user can be repurposed as a resource for another, improving neighbourhood efficiency

The initiative combines top-down big data mining with bottom-up citizen science activities, feeding into AI-augmented monitoring and decision-support tools. This approach helps communities optimise energy use, reduce waste, and support informed decision-making at both local and regional levels.
