Proposed in April 2023, this bill seeks to establish a legal framework for AI systems in Chile. It defines key concepts, creates a National AI Commission, sets authorization procedures, classifies AI systems by risk, and imposes transparency, safety, and accountability requirements. The law aims to protect fundamental rights while fostering responsible innovation.

Name in original language

Regula los sistemas de inteligencia artificial, la robótica y las tecnologías conexas, en sus distintos ámbitos de aplicación

Initiative overview

The proposal arises from the rapid evolution and growing influence of AI technologies, which offer significant economic and social opportunities but also pose ethical, legal, and security risks. Current policies lack binding legal force, leaving gaps in oversight and accountability. Inspired by international standards such as the EU AI Act and Chile’s constitutional mandate to protect life and integrity, this bill introduces clear definitions, risk classifications, and regulatory mechanisms. It aims to prevent harmful practices, ensure transparency, protect data and consumer rights, and establish a National AI Commission to oversee compliance.
