Safe and Responsible AI in Australia: Interim Response

Initiative overview

In 2023 the Australian Government consulted the public on its Safe and responsible AI in Australia discussion paper, which sought views on how the government can mitigate any potential risks of AI and support safe and responsible AI practices. On 17 January 2024 the government published its interim response to this consultation. Rather than move immediately to legislative approaches, the Government response outlines the need for further work on options, including through existing legislative reform agendas. This will include:o considering options for mandatory guardrails for those who develop or deploy AI systems in legitimate, but high risk settings.o considering further opportunities to strengthen existing laws to address risks and harms from AI.The initiative has the following objective(s):Outlines the government's aim to ensure the development and deployment of AI in high-risk settings is safe and reliable, and use in low-risk settings can continue to flourish largely unimpeded.
