Initiative overview
The Sovereign AI Unit was established in DSIT in 2025 as a core pillar of the UK AI Opportunities Action Plan. Chaired by venture capitalist James Wise (Balderton Capital), the Unit operates as a novel government fund structure designed to be the first choice for founders building essential parts of the UK's AI infrastructure. The Unit's mandate covers the full AI value chain: investing in compute infrastructure, supporting data assets, backing frontier model development, and enabling AI application companies. Key activities include launching open calls to researchers and companies through the AI Research Resource (AIRR), supporting 'Autonomous Labs' combining robotics and AI, and forging Memoranda of Understanding with leading AI firms such as Anthropic and OpenAI to advance responsible AI development aligned with UK values. The Unit works alongside the British Business Bank and UKRI, and collaborates with the UK Compute Roadmap to build a world-class compute ecosystem. It complements AI Growth Zones and the National Data Library as part of a broader national AI infrastructure strategy.
