OECD Working Party and Network of Experts on AI

The Working Party on Artificial Intelligence Governance oversees the OECD's work on AI policy. The OECD.AI Network of Experts provides policy, technical and business expert input to inform OECD analysis and recommendations.

Expert Group on AI, Data and Privacy

AI systems rely on increasingly large amounts of training data, including personal data, obtained through a variety of methods. This has led many in both the AI and privacy and data protection communities to pose questions and organise policy responses. At the OECD, AI, privacy, and data protection policy communities have traditionally operated separately, guided by well-established principles included in the OECD Privacy Guidelines, and more recently, the AI principles in the OECD Recommendation on AI. However, with advances in AI capabilities and the rise of AI applications in recent years, there are calls to strengthen the synergies between the AI, privacy and data protection communities. The OECD has a unique role to play in building bridges between these policy communities, conducting well-established policy work in both areas for years.

Expert Group’s scope

The OECD Expert Group on AI, Data, and Privacy, which will be jointly managed by the Working Party on Artificial Intelligence Governance (AIGO) and the Working Party on Data Governance and Privacy (DGP) brings together leading experts from both policy communities to address these challenges. Developing policy frameworks that maximise the innovative potential of AI while mitigating its privacy risks demands new levels of cross-domain collaboration. To this end, this Expert Group includes diverse actors from data protection authorities, policymakers, industry, civil society, and academia. The Expert Group provides insights into possible areas of synergy and to equip governments with the knowledge and tools necessary to develop future-fit policies across both communities. Objectives of the expert group are;

1. Short team objectives

  • Identify relevant privacy principles and practices that can support the development of trustworthy AI
  • Define specific privacy and governance challenges in AI business models
  • Taking stock of synergies and areas of international cooperation between AI, data, and privacy
  • Provide national examples of policy developments at the nexus of AI, data, and privacy

2.   Long term objectives

  • Facilitate multi-stakeholder discussion on future policy-making challenges at the intersection of AI, data, and privacy
  • Develop frameworks and guidelines, as appropriate, to ensure global consistency and interoperability in AI, data, and privacy policies in OECD countries
