Initiative overview

The Policy was originally due to launch in April 2020, but due to the social riots in Chile and COVID-19, it has been postponed to early 2021. However, this extension made a broad participation process possible.The Ministry of Science, Technology, Knowledge and Innovation is leading a working plan to launch a national AI policy and action plan in early 2021.The Chilean AI Policy will contain the strategic alignments that the country has to follow to achieve the following objective: empower the Chilean population in the usage and development of AI tools and participate actively in the legal, ethical, social and economic consequences of AI.The initiative has the following objectives:To empower citizens in the development and application of AI tools, and encourage their participation in the debate on their legal, ethical, social and economic consequences.To develop AI-enabling factors which encompass development of human capital, technological infrastructure, and data availability.To foster the use and development of AI which encompasses research, development, innovation, and entrepeneurship based on AI systems. It also foster adoption both in the private and the public sector.To discuss and reach consensus about ethics, standards, cybersecurity and regulation between the private and public sectors for a human-centered development and use of AI. This includes topics such as privacy, transparency, responsibility, environmental issues, gender-gap, automation impacts, among others.
