Initiative overview
The AI Safety Security Institute Deutschland is a national competence and evaluation center for Frontier AI models. It combines technical, strategic, and security policy expertise within a single central institution. The institute’s primary goal is to evaluate the opportunities and risks that advanced AI models present for Germany and to sustainably strengthen resilience in the field of artificial intelligence.
The AISI Deutschland is currently in the process of being established., where a phased and modular approach is being followed:
- In the first step, a “virtual nucleus” is set up by drawing on existing expertise, particularly from the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) and the Federal Network Agency (BNetzA).
- In a second step, the AI Safety and Security Institute will be further expanded in terms of both scope and capacity. It is intended to advise the Federal Government on fundamental issues of technical evaluation, development scenarios, and strategic action requirements in the field of AI policy, and to ensure a structured transfer of safety and security-relevant knowledge regarding artificial intelligence to the Federal Government, the public administration, the private sector, and civil society.
Its core tasks include, in particular
- the technical evaluation of Frontier AI models (including cyber capabilities, levels of autonomy, robustness, and potential for misuse),
- analyzing the safety and security-related impacts of AI on state, economy, and society,
- providing strategic advice to the Federal Government on AI-related safety, security and sovereignty issues,
- monitoring international technology trends and analyzing the global situation,
- building national expertise and fostering international cooperation in the field of AI safety and security.
From the outset, the AISI Deutschland institute will be internationally oriented and will work closely with corresponding institutions in other countries as well as with multilateral organizations. The institute will also actively participate in the international network of AI safety/security institutes, which serves to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and the development of common positions among the participating countries, and will work together with international partners to establish uniform standards for the effective and safe use of cutting-edge AI.
