Initiative overview
The federal government and the states have jointly developed a strategy for the use of artificial intelligence in the judiciary. This strategy was adopted in June 2025. It sets out a comprehensive vision for the use of AI systems in the judiciary, along with the necessary action plans and measures to achieve this vision. The strategy aims to harness the opportunities offered by AI for the judiciary at federal and state levels, while taking due account of the associated risks and limitations. Notably, the strategy anticipates providing forward-looking support for judicial and administrative processes, enhancing access to justice, and promoting innovation in AI.
Furthermore, the strategy aims to develop a uniform interpretation of the AI Act throughout the federal states and states in order to ensure its coherent and effective implementation within the judiciary. At the same time, it seeks to ensure the AI Act's requirements are fully implemented throughout the judicial system.
Through the joint strategy and an AI platform, AI solutions initially developed by individual states within the framework of specific projects will be made available for reuse by all states and the federal government in accordance with the EfA principle ('Develop once, use everywhere'). This approach is intended to improve cost-efficiency and increase the pace of innovation within the judiciary.
According to the current timetable, the conceptual implementation of the AI Strategy is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
