Initiative overview

The Méi Weed initiative, part of the EIP-AGRI (European Innovation Partnership for Agricultural Productivity and Sustainability) programme, aims to optimise grazing management in Luxembourg. By adapting an existing grass growth prediction model to the country’s pedoclimatic conditions, the project offers farmers more accurate data for planning pasture use.

Key objectives include:

  • Providing forecasts that help farmers adjust grazing areas and supplement livestock feed
  • Enabling better pasture management to cope with climate change impacts
  • Improving economic efficiency and sustainability in livestock farming

The model is delivered through a digital tool, making it easy for farmers to access and use the forecasts in day-to-day decision-making. This innovation helps farmers not only improve productivity but also reduce environmental pressures from overgrazing and inefficient feed use.

Looking forward, the project could be expanded to integrate additional environmental indicators, link to broader EU agricultural data platforms, and support wider adoption of climate-smart farming practices across Luxembourg and potentially other regions.
