Initiative overview

The Romanian Hub of Artificial Intelligence (HRIA) is a strategic initiative designed to ensure a broad and long-lasting impact of AI across Romania’s economy and society. Recognised as a national priority, it seeks to accelerate the adoption of AI while building a competitive and collaborative research environment. HRIA is implemented as a consortium of 7 universities and 8 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), combining academic expertise with industrial innovation capacity.

The general objectives of HRIA are to:

  • Strengthen the national AI research ecosystem by uniting academic and business efforts.
  • Stimulate original scientific creation and innovation in AI.
  • Transfer research results into industry and society, supporting new products and services.
  • Build a national knowledge base that is integrated into the European Research Area.

The project runs from March 1, 2025, to December 31, 2029, during which time it will address multiple research, development, and innovation priorities. These include:

  • Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence
  • Intelligent and Autonomous Systems
  • Smart Human-Computer Interfaces
  • Hardware Technologies for AI
  • AI in Medicine and Healthcare
  • AI in Security and Space
  • AI for Smart Cities
  • AI for the Environment
  • Development and Testing of AI Prototypes and Systems

Looking ahead, HRIA is expected to serve as both a national nucleus for AI knowledge and innovation and a bridge to European initiatives. By fostering collaboration between academia and industry, it will enhance Romania’s capacity to develop cutting-edge technologies, generate economic value, and contribute to addressing global challenges through AI.
